Medical Course Offerings

All Ages First Aid/CPR/AED

This 6-hour curriculum will help develop the basic medical response to emergencies in an urban setting. This course meets USCG First Aid requirements.

The National Maritime Center is a unit under the United States Coast Guard and has been granted authority to regulate the training and licensing of US mariners guided by the US Code of Federal Regulations Title 46, Chapter 1, Subchapter B. A current first aid and CPR certification in required for a Merchant Mariner. 

Wilderness First Aid

This 16-hour curriculum will help develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to medical emergencies in a wilderness setting. 

This is a hands-on, scenario-based training course covering topics from scene management, sudden illness, treating injuries and environmental emergencies. 

Students completing the course will receive a Wilderness First Aid certification from Sierra Rescue International and a CPR/AED certification from Health and Safety Institute (HSI).

Sierra Rescue International certifications are valid for 3 years.

HSI certifications are valid for 2 years. 

Sierra Rescue International Wilderness Medical Course skills and techniques are according to practice guidelines established by the Wilderness Medical Society, as outlined in the Wilderness Medical Society Practice Guidelines.

8 Hour Mariner's (Wilderness) First Aid/CPR

Mariner's first aid differs from a typical urban-based course as it is geared towards prolonged care, delayed evacuations, and utilizes training scenarios targeted for those working at sea or in wilderness environments. 

This 8 hour course is a great introduction to learning basic life support skills on prevention, assessment and treatment of environmental illnesses, recognizing and stabilizing life threats by trauma and managing a wilderness emergency.

Sierra Rescue International certifications are valid for 3 years.

HSI certifications are valid for 2 years.

Wilderness First Responder
+ CPR/AED

The 8 day Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the standard level of medical training for outdoor industry professionals and guides. WFR is a comprehensive and practical curriculum focused on prolonged stabilization and care. Course participants will develop strong patient assessment skills, familiarization with treatment tools to stabilize life-threatening conditions, and learn to provide extended patient care in adverse environments. 

The WFR course is 80 hours and primarily outside with an emphasis on realistic scenarios, mock rescues and hands-on patient assessment practice. 

Students completing the course will receive a Wilderness First Responder certification from Sierra Rescue International and a CPR/AED certification from Health and Safety Institute (HSI).
